small giants

companies that choose to be great instead of big

Bo Burlingham

Got your mojo workin'?  Small Giants examines the qualities and attractions of businesses that make the conscious decision to stay small, true to their founding principles and - largely - immune to the seductive overtones of Big Business wanting to drag them onto the hamster's wheel of growth for its own sake.

Drawing on a cross section of examples from the US, Bo Burlingham can get a bit bogged down in the detail of the case studies and characters involved.  To be fair, that is not accidental - one of his core arguments is that the personal touch, the guiding hand of individuals (never really more than 2-3 in each small giant) and attention to detail lie at the heart of the "mojo" that makes each small giant special in its field.

How does this relate to budding iMagineers?  True, several of the examples are a bit parochial.  The lack of ambition to "conquer the world" may offend the ambitious.  In all though, this book does inspire - whatever take you have on the underlying philosophy.  Why?  Because as this book hits its stride it highlights the power of the company as a vehicle for escape (many of those involved created the business as a vehicle for their artistic or lifestyle vision, although oddly few seem to have quite sustained it as they imagined).  It is a compelling case for human creativity, values and a sense of community being fundamental to all businesses (of whatever size).  And it captures the thrill, and ultimate freedom, of self-governance, self-reliance and payback for backing your own ideas to the hilt.

And if none of that resonates with the iMagineers manifesto then it needs more work.
