Top YouTube clips in 2006

Richard Jones, iMagineer-in-Chief //  29 December 2006

.1   Evolution of Dance  [motivational speaker dances]

.2   Pokemon Theme Music Video  [camp lipsync from sunny California]

.3   Quick Change Artists on America's Got Talent  [Costume changes.  No, honestly]

.4   guitar  [rock version of Pachelbel's Canon from South Korea]

.5   Hey clip  [more lip sync, this time Israeil.  And scantily clad.]

.6   Real Life Simpsons intro  [Sky TV promo]

.7   Urban Ninja  [amateur stunts.  now paid actor]

.8   OK Go - Here it Goes Again  [awesome sync of another kind - gym treadmills]
.9   Ronaldinho - Touch of God  [promo with other worldy bar hitting skills]
.10  Lion Sleep Tonight  [Aardman style French animation]

More than 36 million people have now watched the top clip by the nouveau-famous Judson Laipply - a motivational speaker from Ohio who dances to songs onstage.  Yes, you heard right.  36 million.  For a bit of dancing.  Frankly you get this sort of performance in any English pub come the 80s theme night, but this guy is taking it to a whole new level.  Decent promotion for his motivational speaking business though, right?

Any other budding iMagineers putting 1 and 1 together and making some rapid plans involving camcorders?  And let's not forget the long tail of clips across the site (and others such as Metacafe) that are building a massive presence for amateurs and those eager to buy online eyeballs.

The most striking thing from the list is, well, what a rag bag of randomness it is, apart from perhaps the clip of Ronaldinho in a World Cup year.  Try picking out the zeitgeist from this lot and all you will come out with is a sore head and a working knowledge of chaos theory.  Is this really what the web was invented for?  But for the sheer unadulterated self expression and democracy of it,  can you really argue against it?

See the whole lot as compiled by The Times.
