Mac vs. PC face off hits the big screen

Richard Jones, iMagineer-in-Chief //  2 March 2007

The UK is not used to blatant comparison marketing.  We tend to be so polite that the traditional wisdom is we won't give credence, or even any airtime, to one-upmanship.  The only area we can just about stomach it is in politics, but even there it is only because it tends to liven up otherwise dull debate and the threat of mild fisticuffs puts us reserved Brits on edge.

Sure, we get subtle hints in advertising like "Buzz removes 50% more stubborn stains than any other of the leading brands of detergent!"  But that is really just bopping politely around handbags on the dance floor rather than making a direct approach to the good looking one and saying "Fancy a dance?"

Not so with the Mac vs. PC ads that have now appeared on UK cinema and television screens.  They are drawn from the US examples (where they don't suffer the same level of emotional upheaval at comparison marketing, or indeed any marketing).  The UK versions use Mitchell and Webb of Peep Show fame.  A slightly odd choice - not especially well known, but decent enough performers.  They just about carry it off - though Apple might not be so chuffed with the street cred of the pair if they saw their big screen action (see Confetti, or rather don't; plus some god-awful looking magic film out this year).  Stick to the filth of Peep Show and they are certainly edgy enough to appeal to the Mac target market.  The ads are nice enough vignettes pointing out the obvious PC drawbacks - viruses, crashing, dull machines, dull people etc.

I use both, so have no axe to grind.  This site is done on a PC for my sins, though I am not sure how much longer that will be the case.
